CURRENT CALL-TO-ACTION
Tell the FCC we have a right to know who is funding Political Ads, and how much they are spending!
Dear SLDW members and friends,
Broadcasters
use our public airwaves free of charge, yet little information about
their programming is made openly available to the public. This must
change! The FCC is considering changing the way broadcasters
report basic information about the political ads they broadcast and
who pays for it all. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s Citizens
United decision, which lifted restrictions on corporate political
spending, it is critical that the public have access to information
about who is funding political ads, and how much they are spending.
The
FCC already requires broadcasters to keep information about political
advertising in "public inspection files," but these files are difficult
for the public to access. The FCC has recently proposed requiring
broadcasters to make this financial information available online, where
the data can be easily accessed by anyone. This is a very important
step
towards increased transparency in political advertising. The
National
Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and other groups of broadcasters are
trying
to prevent this change in requirement.
Please TAKE ACTION today and tell the FCC that we have the right to know:
